Renovations to Your Home

For some homeowners, their homes are their most valuable asset. And for most people, the second most valuable asset tends to be far behind that.

A 2023 landmark study by Pew Research found that homeowners typically had $174,000 in equity in their homes. By comparison, retirement accounts had $76,000.1

Having such a powerful asset can raise a lot of questions, including how to decide how and when to make renovations to your property.

Here’s a step-by-step guide for 2026 that can help you organize your thoughts if you are considering some upgrades.

“Look for opportunities to contribute and serve with our unique giftedness to make each community better than it would be without you,” writes Mick Owens, author of the book Diamond of Life: The Five P’s of Success and Significance. “Don’t bite off more than you can chew, but serve where you are passionate and can truly contribute.”

What’s In, What’s Out in 20262

Color Drenching. It’s not just about painting anymore. It’s about the color drenching technique that bathes an entire room—walls, trim, furniture, ceilings—with a single hue. Professionals say color drenching creates an “immersive, moody space” that helps the home feel cohesive.

Man Caves. These are being replaced with golf simulators and pickleball courts. In some cases, homeowners are adding batting cages.

Reading Nooks. Not smartphone nooks! A special spot—whether it’s by a window, beneath the stairs, or tucked in a corner—where you can recharge and take a break from screens.

Juicing Stations. (We didn’t know they were “in” at one time!) People are looking for more versatile kitchen upgrades rather than single-use wellness features.

Spa Bathrooms. Actually, spa bathrooms were never out. They just continue to become more popular. Spa bathrooms can include rainfall showers, soaking tubs, and even heated bathroom floors.

Cookie-Cutter Designs. Craftsmanship is on the rise with renovations. People are looking for features, including handmade tiles and other elements rich with character, to add whimsical touches to their homes.

Resilient Homes: People are being more proactive and looking to take an upper hand over nature. Some renovations are focused on the outside to create a home that can attempt to withstand whatever nature throws at you.
