In the 2007 movie Evan Almighty, starring Morgan Freeman, movie goers were introduced to the power of prayer.

“If someone prays for patience, do you think God gives them patience? Or does He give them the opportunity to be patient?” asks Freeman.

“If they prayed for courage, does God give them courage or does He give them the opportunity to be courageous? If someone prayed for the family to be closer, do you think God zaps them with a warm and fuzzy feeling, or does He give them the opportunity to love each other?”

“For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul? Or what shall a man give in return for his soul?” Matthew 16:26

As an investor, it’s important that you know there are opportunities to align your investments with your spiritual beliefs and values.¹

This strategy is often referred to as impact investing, and the investments are designed to help support companies that offer “good products” and “good practices” while generating a financial return.

Eventide Center for Faith & Investment offers some guidelines to help people know if a company offers a “good product” or a “good practice.” Investors are encouraged to ask themselves a couple of questions.

With companies that are offering a product, ask yourself the following questions:

Is this product meeting an important human need?
Is this product a development that enhances the world?

With companies that position themselves as supporting good practices, consider the
following questions:

  1. Are customers delighted?
  2. Do employees love their jobs?
  3. Are suppliers valued as strategic partners?
  4. Are communities better off because of the company’s presence?
  5. Is the environment being cared for and protected?
  6. Is the world made better by this company’s existence?

As financial professionals, our passion is to teach and challenge each client to bring their financial life into alignment with their belief system.
